The Bagwell-Gossett Connection

I received the following e-mail from Tom Bagwell, a Gossett cousin from Michigan. These Gossetts/Bagwells are not part of The Family of Gossett, but they are part of the Gossett family. As Tom wrote, "Hopefully this info will help future generations of Gossett family researchers find their lost relatives.

Thank you for sharing this information, Tom.

There are now quite a few Gossetts who have the last name of Bagwell living in Michigan. This is because Charlie W. Gossett (1900-1950) came to Michigan in the early 1920's and decided to change his last name (unofficially) to his mothers maiden name of Bagwell. Charlie was the eldest son of Maxwell Tupper Gossett (1878-1943) of Greenville, SC. [South Carolina]. Maxwell's father was Rudolphus King Gossett 1844-1924.

Charlie W. Gossett arrived in Michigan and became known as Charles William Bagwell married to Marie E. (Arnold) Bagwell, also of Greenville SC. My father was Charles W. Bagwell, Jr.. Hopefully this info will help future generations of Gossett family researchers find their lost relatives.

Learn more about the Gossett/Bagwell Connection...
  • 1930 Federal Population Census: Michigan
Charles and Marie Bagwell were living on Ford Road in Wayne County, Michigan's Dearborn Township, at the time of the 1930 federal census. The family included Charles, age 31; his wife Marie E., 25; his brother Frank H., 18; and his children Doris, 8; and Charles Jr., 4 7/12.

  • 1920 Federal Population Census: South Carolina
The Maxwell Tupper and Rudolphus King families are found living next door to each other in Honea Path Township in Anderson County, South Carolina. The men in the family were working as brick masons, including 75-year-old Dolph.

  • Maxwell Tupper Gossett's South Carolina death certificate (seen below) can be found in the FamilySearch Record Search database entitled "South Carolina Deaths, 1915-1943". This record shows his first name is Mattison Tupper -- not Maxwell Tupper. The informant was Jodie Bagwell, his wife, so the information should be considered as accurate. This database also includes Maxwell's siblings James Clinton Gossett, Dolph E. Gossett, and John Edward Gossett. There are surely many more if you spend a little time searching through this database.
