Paul Jones (1834-1910) Civil War Pension File
|
|
Paul Jones served with the Union during the American Civil War. He enlisted at the age of 27 at Camp Dennison on September 5, 1861, and was assigned to the 54th Ohio Infantry Regiment, Company A. Paul stayed with the Company until it was mustered out in 1865.
Paul's pension file is quite large. There are 102 pages in this file but it is not his complete file. I am waiting for the National Archives to send the additional 18 pages.
The file contains the following:
- Certified copy of the marriage for Paul and his second wife Ellen Camp. Page 5.
- A voucher filled out by Paul that verifies his marriage to Ellen; his marriage to Charity and her date and place of death; his four children with Charity named and the children's dates of birth; and Paul's signature. Page 6.
- Paul's original certificate from the Bureau of Pensions, dated June 19, 1889, granting him a pension of $8 per month commencing on September 5, 1888, for "chronic diarrhea and diseases of the rectum." Page 14.
- On December 9, 1904 Paul requested "additional invalid pension" due to "injury to left side, hip and leg." Page 36. On page 46 Paul says he received the injury while at Resaca, Georgia, in the fall of 1864. The main battle at Resaca occurred during May 1864, however, the regimental history does place the company in northern Georgia from September 29th to November 3rd of that year.
- History of Claims made by Paul. Page 47
- Ellen's affidavit that she was Paul's widow, includes verification of her date and place of birth. The affidavit is dated just a few weeks before her death in November 1916. Page 58.
- An affidavit from Samuel A. Jones, on behalf of his step-mother Ellen Jones verifying that Ellen is the widow of his father. This page includes Samuel's signature. Page 90.
- Eva Kiphart requested $39.75 from the government for expenses from the care and burial of her mother, Ellen. She was granted $22.75. She was denied $6 for rent, $9 for groceries and $2 for coal. Page 67. Page 60 gives details concerning the payment.
There is a lot of duplication in this pension file. A large portion is dedicated to Ellen and her attempts to be paid a widow's pension based on Paul's service. Ellen had been married twice prior to her marriage to Paul. Ellen first married Samuel Hutchison but was not eligible on his record because their marriage ended in divorce. Ellen's second husband, Clark Camp, never served in the military. Ellen needed to prove that she was not receiving a pension based on the service of either of these men.
