David J. Mills (1820-1900) Civil War Pension File

David J. Mills served with the Union during the American Civil War. He enlisted at Cincinnati, Ohio on September 28, 1864 and agreed to one year's service with the 181st Regiment, Company C.
The file contains:
- An application for pension benefits that provides the married name of his second wife, Mary Bobo, and the date and place of death for his first wife Charity; and the names of three children who were alive at the time of the application. Page 4.
- Details of enlistment. Page 5. Included on this page, "he is reported absent, Deserted at Camp Dennison O., Oct. 23 -- 4 mo's musted dated April 30 '65, reports him Present, with remark Dropped by error on last roll as deserter." Also, "No evidence of alleged disability."
- Marriage record for David and his second wife, Mary Steadman, married on May 19, 1892. Page 7.
- Affidavit by Mary Mills that she is the widow of David J. Mills. This includes detailed information on her former husbands and children, Page 9-11.
- Mary's application for a widow's pension based on the service of her first husband, James Coakes. Coakes died at Nashville, Tennessee from lung fever while serving in the 78th Illinois Infantry during the Civil War. She received his pension until she married James Steadman. Page 18.
