The Ancestors of Milton Gossett: Looking Back

In Evangeline Gossett Newcomer's book The Family of Gossett, Milton Gossett is described as one of the lesser known sons of John Gossett (of Ohio). Milton is my connection to the family described in Newcomer's book as well as Grace Jerkins' Chronicles of the Gossett Family.

These two books chronicle the lives of Milton Gossett's ancestors. Family of Gossett is commonly referred to as "The Newcomer Book". Mrs. Newcomer traces Milton's ancestors back to the Gossetts living in St. Sauveur, France. She describes the estate as being on the Douve River where "the Allied invasion of WWII took place."

"As early as 1463 the Gossetts were included in the role of nobles of Normandy. This shows they were the Feudal Barons who were admitted to an order called the Nobility of France which was formed in 1463 by King Louis XI (1461-1483)."

These early Gossett nobles were of the Huguenot faith, members of the reformed or Calvinistic communion-also known as French Protestants. In 1598, King Henry IV granted considerable religious and civil liberty to them. That act was known as the Edict of Nantes. But in 1685, King Lois XIV revoked the Edict. As a result, the Huguenots suffered great persecution because of their faith. Many fled France for England, Germany and the Netherlands. Our Gossett relatives lost all of their lands when they fled to the Isle of Jersey in the English Channel. Gossett relatives are still living there."

The second book, Chronicles of the Gossett Family, by Grace M. Jerkins, follows the Gossetts after their arrival in America. Mrs. Jerkins relates that the Newcomer book "can be found in several libraries" and "has been microfilmed by the Library at Salt Lake City."

Both books may be obtained through the inter-library loan program at most libraries. Chronicles of the Gossett Family is copyrighted 1985 by Grace M. Jerkins. The Library of Congress number is 85-063269. Family of Gossett does not contain copyright information nor a Library of Congress number. Neither book has an ISBN. Family of Gossett can also be found at Ancestry, however, a subscription to Ancestry is required.

Will the Real John And Honor Stand Up!
Information about Milton Gossett's ancestors is taken from both of these books. Even with the most meticulous research, mistakes happen. Fellow Gossett researcher, Ellnora Young, found a "hidden" marriage record for Milton Gossett's parents, John and Honour Gossett. Both Newcomer's and Jerkin's book list Honour's maiden name as "Morgan". This "hidden" marriage record clearly gives her maiden name as "Hull." That record is as follows:

"Washington County,Pennsylvania, Deed book 11-15, 12 December 1790, Robinson's Run. John Gossett & Honora, his wife, who is the heir of John Hull, deceased, and were lawfully married on 8 April 1788 and who lives in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, convey all their right, title and interest to the tract of land on Robinson's Run to Rachel Hull."

This was proof, at least, that a John Gossett did marry an Honor Hull, but was this John Gossett the father of my Milton Gossett? I believe it was, in fact, my John Gossett because the Newcomer book states:

  • "The 1790 Federal census listed John Gossett the head of three persons (himself, wife and young son), residing in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania." page 78, second paragraph.

  • "The earliest record found in Kentucky concerning John Gossett was discovered by Mrs. W. B. Ardery, genealogist, Paris, Bourbon County, Kentucky. It is a record of note, dated July 9, 1788, for 24 pounds, 16 shillings, 6 pence to Rachel Hull, Administratrix for John Hull (deceased), with promise to pay, July 9, 1789, lawful money of the State of Pennsylvania." page 76, 3rd paragraph.

  • The Newcomer book on page 76, 1st paragraph: "A letter written by Dr. W. O. Gossett of Kempton, Indiana, mentions Honor's maiden name as Morgan. Also intimated in a deed that she was a Morgan, possibly a granddaughter of Col. Morgan Morgan." However, on page 78, 1st paragraph, she uses the words "possible" and "could have been" in describing the relationship between Honor and Col. Morgan, leading me to believe that she did not have a definite connection.

Information about the families listed below is taken from The Family of Gossett. Recent YDNA evidence strongly suggests that Mrs. Newcomer's research is flawed. I have not personally done any research on Milton's family beyond his parents John and Honour. I do, however, believe that John's father was Matthias Gossett (described as being from Virginia) largely because Mrs. Newcomer stated that she was in possesion of a Gossett family Bible that documents this relationship.

YDNA is changing genealogy and proving long-held beliefs to be wrong. For that reason I urge you to read European Origins of the American Gossetts by Jeffrey Lynn Gossett and James Michael Gossett. They begin,

"Recent evidence -- from both traditional genealogical research and from YDNA analyses -- casts strong doubt on the myth that the Gossetts in America descend from Jean the Huguenot of Jersey Isle. The story of our supposed Norman-French origins, and the emigration of two Gosset brothers -- grandsons of Jean -- from Jersey Isle to America, has been repeated many times in many places. Here, however, we subject it to close scrutiny in light of new evidence. The evidence from conventional genealogy strongly suggests that most of the American Gossetts descend from John Gossett and Jane Williamson living in New Castle County (now part of Delaware) before 1709."

I am not sure which is the correct genealogy for Milton Gossett. I am, therefore, presenting both sides (click the link European Origins of the American Gossetts to view the other theory on Milton's ancestors).

Note regarding Honor Hull. In the Family of Gossett by Evangeline Gossett Newcomer, Honor's maiden name is intimated as Morgan. A hidden marriage record was found that proves her maiden name was Hull. That record gives her father as John Hull. Further research revealed that Honor's parents were John and Rachel "Gossett" Hull. This information came from "The Descendants of Rev. Joseph Hull" compiled by Col. Charles Weygant and Orra Eugene Monnette. However, other Hull researchers now dispute the maiden name for Honor's mother, stating Rachel's maiden name as "Cogall".
